How long have you been involved with education? What do you like best about teaching grade six? I have been an educator, artist and creator involved with encouraging, enabling and supporting young people for more than half my lifetime! I have been teaching grade six for two years and I LOVE it! The deeper learning and discussions that happen, the cool novels studies, the overnight field trips that build a strong sense of community all make grade six the perfect place for me to teach.
What subjects will you be focusing on? I will be the lead teacher with Language Arts, and Social Studies. Both of these subjects are in my wheelhouse of expertise and passion and I am excited they are my focus of study in grade six. I will also support Ms. Schmitz with math and science and continue to learn along side with the students.
What are your favourite hobbies? What should we know about you? I am a very active person and don't like to be "doing nothing" for too long, I go to the gym most mornings. I have a really cool road bike that goes like the wind and I love riding it on the Canmore Legacy Trail. I love cross country skiing in the winter and kayaking in the summer. I love being an artist as well. I have to work very hard and practice my sketching skills constantly. My focus the last few years has been water color, but this summer I have started to work with acrylic paint. I find everything about the theatre irresistible and love Shakespeare! Singing and music play a huge part in my life and I have been known to break out into song at random moments! I also am keen to travel and have had numerous opportunities to visit many places on this great big world we live in.
What is a quote that inspires you? My life long quote is from Immanuel Kant, " Have the courage to use your own reason" or... have the courage to use your own understanding.

How many years have you been teaching? What do you like best about teaching grade six? This is my fifth year teaching and I have taught grade six every year. There is no grade I would rather teach. The grade six year is unlike any other since we go on over night trips. You really get to know each other which is my favourite part.
What subjects will you be focusing on? I will primarily teach and assess math and science. I am passionate about these areas and love the grade six curriculum for these subjects. I will also always be a part of Language Arts and Social Studies.
What are you most looking forward to this year? Everything! I can't pick just one thing.
What are your favourite hobbies? I enjoy keeping very busy. I spend a lot of time outside of school hours doing work but have a lot of hobbies, too. I love fitness and am active every day. I play on a dodgeball team and in the summer on a slow pitch team. I am a total bookworm and enjoy reading true stories about history and the world. I love to sketch and draw cartoons, as well. I adore travelling and have backpacked and seen many different countries and cultures around the world.
What inspires you? People. The world. My students inspire me to be a better teacher and to look at the world through a youthful eye. Our amazing school staff inspires me to keep learning and try new things in my teaching practice. Carla inspires me to look at my practice from a different perspective and to be strong in my convictions.
