- Come prepared to be outside all day. Comfortable shoes, a hat, sunglasses, WATER!!, sunscreen, inhalers, and whatever else you think you may need.
- Bring a loonie for a locker. This way you can store your personal items in a locker all day instead of having to carry it around and leave it unattended while you are on rides.
- Pack a snack and lunch. If you would like to purchase food you are welcome to, but any money you bring you are personally responsible for.
- You will have freedom to visit the park WITH YOUR GROUP for the day. You must stay with everybody that you have chosen to be in your group.
- Ensure that you have some sort of watch (preferably with an alarm) in order to meet up at certain points during the day.

Tomorrow is the Grade 6 Farewell. Here are the important details:
- Starts at 10:30am in the gym, lasting about an hour
- Free lunch will be provided afterward. The lunch is two pieces of pizza each, caesar salad, a drink, and dessert. If you have different tastes, or feel that you may need to eat more than this, please feel free to bring other items to eat.
- The afternoon will consist of being outside and participating in games and activities. This means you may want a change of clothes that is different than what you wear at the ceremony.
- Parents should arrive at 10:15 and are welcome to take photos during the ceremony and afterward.
- Our grade 6 Book Fair will be up in the library for parents to view, as well

- Tomorrow is Bike to School Day. Schools all over Calgary will be participating in this event. The goal is to have as many students as possible bike to school. You can bring your bike to the outside gym door (look for the signs) and check it into the gym for the day, so no locks are needed. At the end of the day come pick up your bike and head home! Participants are welcome to email [email protected] their name and school name for a chance to win one of the awesome prizes!

- Today we watched the spectacular Little Prince at Theater Calgary. Interesting conversation question: What differences did you find between the book and the play? Did you like the different way they told the story? Why or why not?
- Optional math practice review handed out today. There are questions about all of the topics that will be covered on next Tuesday's math test. As stated, it is optional, but if students want their work to be marked they must hand it in by Friday at 8:30 so Ms. Schmitz has time to review them and go over concepts with any students that may need the extra help. - Little Prince field trip tomorrow. Please ensure that you bring a packed lunch that we will be eating before we leave for our trip. A granola bar will be provided for each student as a snack at the theater. Please dress appropriate for being at a theater (non wrinkled, clean clothing)

- We have started a new novel study. Half of the class is reading Brian's Winter and the other half is reading The Giver. Students will be provided class time three times a week to work on their novel study work. Students must finish reading the allotted chapters by the end of each week. If you are finding that this is difficult to finish in class you should bring the book home to continue reading.

- Math Test Thursday
Monday, October 19th
- Election day! Watch for the results of the federal election tonight on the news. Democracy in action!
- Math Test this Thursday the 22nd. The test will cover place value up to one billion, the coordinate grid, and all transformations (translations, rotations, reflections). Need some extra help? Please contact Ms. Schmitz to set up a time to meet before or after school, or over lunch time. Math tab has lessons covered on topics.
- Science Test next Monday, the 26th. The test will be on the unit of Trees & Forests. In particular, make sure you understand: coniferous/deciduous trees, how to classify a leaf's shape, margin, and branching pattern, the names of trees native to Alberta, the food chain (energy, producer, consumer, decomposers), photosynthesis, categories and example of human impact. See science tab for lessons on most topics.
- Math Homework - Brian's Map. Complete at least three movements of Brian on your map. No more class time will be provided. Due this Thursday the 22nd. Students have been working on this at school and need to bring the proper sheets home themselves. See math tab for expectations.
Friday, October 16th,
- VOTING DAY ON MONDAY OCTOBER 19TH! Exercise your parents democratic rights and take them to the voting polls - then take them out for a coffee afterwards !
- Social Homework - Interview questions and preparing to vote chart handout - found on social tab
- Hatchet will soon be coming to an end. All Hatchet books that students are using are personal copies of Ms. Samuelson. Please make sure you have your copy at school at all times. Students are responsible for the replacement cost if they have misplaced their book.

- Math practice due Friday (attached further town). There are two errors on the math practice - sorry! On Question #5 the second triangle needs to have A and C switched. On Question #6 you will need to add another reflection line above the first shape. Need any help? Check out the math tab - all lessons are posted there.
- Choir notice sent home. Choir will take place on Wednesdays during lunch hour.

Outdoor school tomorrow!
Tomorrow morning - please arrive at your normal time, there is no need to come to school early. When you arrive, you will meet us at the baseball diamond close to the parking lot (please make sure you are not standing in the parking lot). We will have blue tarps out that you can put your all of your gear (suitcases, sleeping bags, etc.) on. You then need to check in with Ms. Schmitz for attendance. When the bus driver is ready we will load all of the gear on the bus - we will ask for volunteers at this time. Otherwise you are welcome to chat with friends and family on the field in a close range. The bus should be leaving around 9:15. If there is inclement weather, we will meet in the school gymnasium instead. Make sure to give your family members an extra tight hug tonight!
We will arrive back from camp on Friday at approximately 2:00pm. Someone must be there to bring you home unless you have provided a letter with consent stating that you are allowed to walk home on your own.

- All medication sent in MUST be accompanied by a release form - this includes non-prescription medication. Please see the last page on the form below.
- Hyperbole assignment due Monday. Please have your assignment shared with Ms. Samuelson ([email protected]) from google drive or have it completed on the school server under your file in LA.
- Some students, by choice, this weekend are bring home their Hatchet science project.
- Pack for outdoor school this weekend - make sure you include everything from the list on your information package.
- Pick up at the end of outdoor school is Friday, October 9th at 2:00pm - student may not walk home alone without written consent prior to leaving Tuesday. Parents please be on time for pick up.

Thursday, October 1st
- Social Studies, "Where do you stand?" questions due tomorrow
- Math coordinate practice riddle is homework due tomorrow for certain students who did not complete in class. These parents will have received an email if it is homework for their child
- Reminder - Brian's Survival Project is due *Wednesday, October 14th* which provides everyone with time to add some interesting new things they learn at Outdoor School!
- Class Phone and Email Request form sent home. Please return as soon as possible.
- Outdoor School is next Tuesday the 6th to Friday the 10th. We will arrive back from camp on Friday at 2pm. Every student needs a ride home or a note that gives permission from parent saying they can walk home.
- Medication - please bring ASAP.
- Dietary concerns/allergies? Make sure you contact the camp in advance. Food director's contact is listed in the Camp Chief Hector booklet.

Wednesday, September 30th
- All Outdoor School forms must be returned ASAP.
- Please start bringing in medication. This helps us immensely when leaving for our trip on Tuesday morning.
- Brian's Survival Project (science) is due ***Wednesday, October 14th***. The due date has been extended, meaning more class time will be provided and projects will be even more outstanding!
- Math practice is due tomorrow. There is a copy attached below our Monday agenda.
- Terry Fox run was a great success today! Grade 6s set a great example for the rest of the school.
- It's not too early to start packing. Start checking to see if you have everything on the packing list. If you are in need of specific items please let us know since the school may have extras.
- Social Studies homework page, "Where do you Stand", questions. Questions sent home and under the social tab. These questions are due Friday, October 2nd.
- Social studies page has new updates to check out - this is not homework, but it will extend and deepen your understand of our topics in social.

- No school tomorrow
- Social homework due Monday. This was truly *homework*. No class time was provided. Students will be asked to hand in their social notebooks with their completed homework at 8:30 on Monday

Friday, September 18th
- JumpingPound Field Trip on Monday! Bus leaves just after 8:30am, so you must be on time. Be prepared to be outside ALL DAY. Items required: proper shoes, layers of clothing, hat, sunglasses, sunblock, water, a snack, and a packed lunch (preferably as garbage free as possible)
- Math number project due Tuesday. This means you should be ready to hand in your planning sheet and present on your topic on Tuesday.
Thursday, September 17th

- Several people have not brought back their JumpingPound field trip form yet - these must come in tomorrow. We now have enough volunteers - thank you to those volunteering!
- Math project due next Tuesday - tomorrow is the last class to work on these at school. Can't wait to hear all about these large numbers you have been researching. Remember - a quick script is very helpful - you only have two minutes to speak!

- Please return field trip forms for Jumping Pound - still looking for volunteers
- Home work folders need to be returned each day
- Math project due next Tuesday, students were given class time today to work on it.
- We have a possible date for our trip to Edmonton to visit the Legislative Building, in order to book we will need one dad to volunteer to come with us. The possible date is March 10-11, 2016 - please let us know if there is a parent interested. Security clearance must be completed ahead of time.
Monday, September 14
- Please bring in tree samples from home. What we are looking for is small snippets off a tree that includes its leaves - pine trees are helpful too!
- JumpingPound Field Trip forms due back by Thursday. The cost is $10. We need five volunteers to come with us. Extra forms are attached below.
- Large Numbers - What do they really tell us? Math project assigned today. Please find outline and expectations under Math tab. This project is due next Tuesday, September 22nd.

Where the direction of one line in one part of the painting is continued somewhere else in the painting. This is a metaphor of our classroom community - each of us is our own piece of art, but we are also connected to one another and when we collaborate, together, we make a masterpiece!

- Tree cartoon due Monday - expectations outlined under Science tab
- "Truth and Lie" poem due Monday - example on LA tab
- **Please bring in tree samples from your home. We are going to start identifying trees and need small branches, leaves, and examples of trees in your area. Only collect items that you have permission to take.** This is really helpful for the whole class - bring in a small bag or garbage bag.

- Mandatory parent meeting tonight. Two times to choose from; 5-6 pm or 6:15 -7:15
- Indoor shoes are require for school - they need to be appropriate for gym
- Which candidates are running in your riding? Who are they? What political parties are being represented? Questions you may want to research to get a head of the game!
- Bring in newspaper articles and political cartoons to share with the class about the federal election. We will be starting a Federal Election Wall - get involved and bring in news articles & political cartoons you can share with the class!

- Mandatory parent meeting tomorrow night. 5-6 pm or 6:15-7:15. One parent must attend.

- Parent meeting notice sent home today (attached below). Meeting will be this Thursday the 10th. There are two sessions: 5-6pm OR 6:15-7:15pm. At least one parent MUST attend the meeting as we will be discussing Outdoor School. Drop in to whichever time works for you.
- Offsite activities form sent home today. Please return with a signature as soon as possible. This allows us to go on walks outside of the school yard. For example, visiting South Glenmore Park to examine their trees and forests for science.

- Parent meeting next Thursday the 10th. The meeting will be run twice: once from 5-6pm and again from 6:30-7:30pm. Parents are invited to attend either time.
